Summary: In this week’s reading from 2 Chronicles 6-8, we read in the scriptures how the Shekinah, the glory cloud of the presence of YHVH came to rest in the Temple. The priests fall upon the faces, not able to stand in the presence of this glorious presence of God. Solomon’s speaks out an incredible prayer of dedication over the Temple, the place where YHVH has chosen to dwell:
And now I have chosen and consecrated this House that My name be there forever. My eyes and My heart shall always be there. 2 Chronicles 7:16

Yet, there is also a warning:
But if you turn away from Me and forsake My laws and commandments that I set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot them from My land that I gave them, and this House that I consecrated to My name I shall cast out of my sight, and make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And as for this House, once so exalted, everyone passing by it shall be appalled and say, ‘Why did Hashem do thus to this land and to this House?’ 2 Chronicles 7: 19-22

This prophecy did come to pass. On the 9th of Av, 586 BC, the temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. It was rebuilt, and then again, hundreds of years later, on the 9th of Av, 70 AD, the temple was again destroyed, this time by the Romans. But, there will be a THIRD Temple…coming soon!
