This week the annual Torah cycle begins anew, from “in the beginning,” with Genesis, or Bereshiet 1. And, admittedly, this is one of the most “packed” parashot in the Bible, since it literally IS ‘the Foundation’ upon which the rest is built.
During the Erev Shabbat look, Mark attempts to explain why — among other things — this portion is a great ‘proof text’ for the fact that this is far more than even ‘merely’ a Creation Story, it literally sets up EVERYTHING that follows, in the Book, and in history:
So much of EVERYTHING that is wrong, and that is right, in the world today, has it’s ‘genesis’ right here. Certainly this reading has a lot to tell us about how we got where we are. But there’s also a theme here that cannot be overlooked in a world so filled with evil as we now see.
And it has to do with Authority – real, imagined, and usurped.
