Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?” Matthew 15:1-3
The Pharisees elevate the Oral Torah ABOVE the Written Torah. In the Oral Torah, it is mandatory to ritually wash your hands before a meal, even if your hands are already clean. This is NOT in the written Torah.
Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man. Matthew 15:11
Yeshua is teaching here about “clean” and “unclean” at the sod level, at the “heart” level of Torah.
“And Yeshua said to him, Now do you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.” Luke 11:39
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matthew 15:18
Yeshua is saying “you wash the outside of the cup (you ritually wash your hands), but the inside of the cup (your heart) is full of ravening and wickedness.”
Yeshua taught His disciples in Matthew 15 that if you follow the Oral Torah, meaning if you wash your hands before a meal, but you have an evil heart, then you are still unclean to Him. Yeshua did not teach His disciples that they could eat anything that they want. He was teaching them the sod level, or the heart level, of what it means to be clean.
